Self-Care for Caregivers: Walk It Off

Whether you work in the healthcare or personal services industry, or take care of an elderly loved one or a sick child at home, it's important to remember to take care of yourself.

One of the best and easiest ways to find mental, physical, and emotional renewal is to go for a solitary walk. This does not need to be a 30-minute intense workout with weights, an iPod, and special workout clothes. A five-minute stroll in the fresh air will do wonders.

If you are with someone in the hospital and don't wish to travel so far, just let your loved one's nurse know that you are "taking 5." Walk to an area with windows and look at the outside world. Or hit the stairwell and walk up a couple of flights of stairs, then back down. Get your blood moving and your feet moving, to help renew your mind and energy for yourself and your loved one.
